From Mrs. Hayslip at Taylor Elementary:

"In celebration of Black History Month, 5th graders engaged in a multidisciplinary project by creating Black History Biography Quilt Squares. To begin, learners performed an analysis of the word "biography," identifying the Greek root bio (life) and the suffix graphy (writing) as our word study lesson. After selecting a historical figure to research, students synthesized their findings into a visual narrative and then presented their research to their class. This project culminated in a collaborative class-level "quilt" that showcases their writing and artistic design."

What a meaningful project!

Students in Mrs. Andi Lunsford's class at Moody Elementary have been learning through hands-on experiments as they study physical science!

They explored chemical changes by creating gases with baking soda and vinegar, identified substances using physical properties, and even made ice cream while learning about physical changes. Students also enjoyed a visit from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, where they learned about aquatic plants found in the school pond.

Learning is always more fun when students can explore science in action!

On Saturday, several of our Moody students and staff jumped in to support Special Olympics Arkansas. The Polar Plunge is an opportunity for individuals and organizations to jump in and make a difference for athletes across Arkansas, benefitting more than 20,000 Special Olympics Arkansas athletes who compete and train year-round in 15 different sports. 100% of every donation goes directly to Special Olympics Arkansas.

We are proud to share that Moody Elementary was recognized as the Top Fundraising Group, donating $775 at the event, and with continued donations, our total has now reached $795! This effort was led by Moody's Great Girl and Great Guy Clubs, open to any fifth grader who wants to join. These clubs focus on giving back through monthly meetings, community speakers, and hands-on service projects. This spring, students chose to support our inclusion classmates through the Polar Plunge, which was very personal to them since they learn alongside these students each day. They are already planning to attend the upcoming Special Olympics Track & Field Meet to continue cheering on and supporting their peers.

What do ATLAS results tell us?

ATLAS results give us a snapshot of how your student is doing with grade-level skills. They help us see what your student understands well and where extra support might be needed.

ATLAS shows:

  • How your student is performing on grade-level work

  • Skills your student has mastered

  • Areas that may need more practice

  • How our school is performing overall

ATLAS does not show:

  • Everything your student can do

  • How hard they work each day

  • Their creativity, personality, or potential

ATLAS is just one piece of the puzzle. Teachers also use classroom work, daily assignments, and observations to understand your student’s progress.

Mrs. Hulse's second grade class at Moody participated in the Hearts Across the World project during February. They exchanged Valentines with classrooms, friends, and families all across the world. Each card location was recorded on individual student maps, helping them learn geography and make real-world connections. As of today, they have received over 200 cards from 49 different states and 3 different countries. They also received several gifts.

Last week, students and teachers enjoyed a day full of fun at the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament. White Hall hosted and members of our White Hall High School basketball teams helped run the tournament, cheering on athletes from every school and assisting on the court to make the experience special for everyone involved. We were proud to have students participating from Moody Elementary, White Hall Middle School, and White Hall High School. It was an incredible reminder of the joy, sportsmanship, and sense of community that events like this bring to our district.

What are interim assessments?

You may hear your student or their teachers talk about interim assessments, but what are they?

Interim assessments are check-ins given during the school year. Students in K–2 take one interim, and students in grades 3–10 take two interims. These assessments help teachers see how students are doing in a subject. They are not used to determine grades. Interim assessments are designed to look at the whole picture of a subject. You may hear the word “blueprint” used when talking about assessments. A blueprint is simply a roadmap of everything students are expected to learn in a subject during the year. Instead of focusing on just one lesson or unit, interim assessments include questions from across the subject to show how students are doing overall.

After interim assessments are complete, teachers review the results to better understand student progress and next steps. Teachers use this information to:

  • See which skills students are already comfortable with

  • Spot areas where students may need extra support

  • Plan small groups, review activities, or enrichment

Interim assessments help schools respond during the school year, instead of waiting until the end. They give teachers and families useful information so we can work together to support student growth.

Second Grade Information Night

11th grade students will take the ACT during the school day on February 24. The test will begin as soon as possible after the first bell.

The ACT measures skills students have been building in English, math, reading, and science. Recent updates to the ACT include a slightly shorter test, more time per question, and fewer answer choices in math, helping students work at a comfortable pace while still showing what they know.

Students can find helpful information about test day expectations, practice questions, and preparation tips on the Information for Examinees page. Information for Examinees Page

This free, school-day ACT gives students an opportunity to gain experience and earn a college-reportable score in a familiar setting. Questions? Contact Mrs. Powell at powellt@whitehallsd.org

Students in Mrs. Smith’s Exploring Business Applications class recently put their Business Dress for Success knowledge to the test with a mock online shopping activity. Their challenge was to purchase all the professional clothing items they would need for the workplace while staying within a set budget.

Through this activity, students learned that dressing professionally shows potential employers they are serious, prepared, and ready for the job. They also gained valuable experience in budgeting—making thoughtful spending decisions and understanding the importance of setting and sticking to a financial plan.
