Appeals Procedures for GATE

Step One: The appealer may request a conference with the GT Coordinator regarding the placement decision. If the appealer still questions the decision, the formal appeals process is begun.

Step Two: The appealer should present a written statement of appeal that includes information sharing what data indicates the child is in need of GT services.

Step Three: Administration officials shall be notified of appeals in process and are included in the process.

Step Four: The placement committee, chaired by the GT Coordinator, will meet. The committee shall include at least 5 professional educators, including administrators, teachers and/or counselors, and chaired by the gifted trained specialist. The appealer will NOT be present when the committee reviews data and decides placement. The committee will review the data that was collected to make the original placement decision. This data includes at least two objective and two subjective measures, one of which assesses creativity. The committee may decide to collect more data.

Step Five: The placement decision shall be communicated in writing.
